On Wednesday 3rd November 1954 Hearts beat Leeds United 4-2 with Jimmie Wardhaugh scoring four goals and Albert Nightingale scoring the two goals for Leeds United. Hearts gave Leeds a lesson in direct, forceful, quick marking football under the Elland Road lights. The "Terrible Trio" of Conn, for his long range shots, Bauld, for his intelligent play, and after pulling the mighty John Charles out of position, and Wardhaugh for his quick thinking and four goals, were very impressive. The whole team in fact played very well with MacKay and Cumming also getting through a power of work. At one stage United had pulled back to 2-2 but Hearts in the end ran out comfortable winners watched by a 10,000 crowd. The line-ups were:- Leeds United: Wood; Dawson, Hair; Gibson, Charles, Kerfoot; Williams, Nightingale, Forrest, Vickers, McCall. Hearts: Duff; Adie, MacKenzie; MacKay, Glidden, Cumming; Rutherford, Conn, Bauld, Wardhaugh, Urquhart.

Four Goals for Wardhaugh against United
By Richard Ulyatt: LEEDS UNITED 2 HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 4
If United, as well as Hearts, had been willing to shoot on sight, the result might well have been a draw, for though the Scottish League side finished clearly superior, both in intention and execution, the first twenty minutes belonged to United, who, finding their best shots saved, descended to mere waffling in front of goal and were lucky twice to equalise. Hearts had no use for over-much passing. They were direct. The ball was gathered on the run, an opponent was drawn, a partner ran into position - and the pass was made some distance ahead. They were fast, alert and supremely fit - a pleasure to watch, particularly their inside forwards, who never ceased to work. One of them Wardhaugh, scored all their goals, two of them with the help of his partners Bauld and Conn, but all five forwards were willing to shoot hard and often and Conn's long range shots were spectacular feature of the night. Nightingale scored both United's goals, yet had he and Vickers taken a leaf out of the Hearts' book, they might well have had half-a-dozen goals. Three times Vickers had scoring chances with a first-time kick, but on each occasion he preferred to switch the ball to the other foot. Twice Nightingale was similarly at fault. Refereeing from the stand I thought his first goal was offside. Forrest, Dawson, Hair and Kerfoot were United's best players.
